Kayak tours of Devon's rivers, lakes and Jurassic Coast
Your day trip will be led by a BC (British Canoe) qualified kayak instructor. We provide all the sit in kayaking equipment you will need (paddles, buoyancy aids, spray decks helmets when required, etc) leaving you to chill out and enjoy the breathtaking scenery we pass along the way. The exact details of each trip are finalised the previous day, taking into consideration local weather forecasts, the general ability of the group, your preferences and the time of year. In our briefing before your trip we cover all safety aspects, your contact details while on the water with us, health issues, what to wear, what to bring with you, and what experience you may have. There is always transport on hand should you need to be taken back to base. A moderate level of fitness is required - distances paddled are between 8 km and 10 km. We are always aware of local weather conditions. Although generally good, winds can be strong and our plans can sometimes change as a result.
As well as day trips, we offer tuition for beginners. Training takes place in the shallow (Blue Flag) Sandy Bay at Exmouth and lessons are based around understanding the movements of the kayak and learning how how the paddle, boat and water interact, as well as being taught the key safety and rescue skills required to safely paddle in a sheltered sea environment.
Tour One – Budleigh Salterton to Sidmouth
Depart - 10.00 / Return 16.30
Level – Intermediate
Price - £35.00
We set out east from Budleigh Salterton through shallow waters. There are great views looking back towards the resort. Along the way we pass impressive sandstone cliffs, part of the Jurassic Coast before arriving at Ladram Bay (above), a cove with a small pebble beach where we can pull in for a swim. Our next stop is Sidmouth where we walk up to the Clock Tower Café while admiring the stunning vista as the cliffs plunge into the sea. We stop here for lunch before retracing our route back to Ladram Bay for some rock hopping, swimming or snorkelling, followed by a relaxing paddle back to base.
Tour Two – Exeter, River and Canal Paddle
Depart - 10.00 / Return 16.00
Level – Beginners, improvers or above
Price - £35.00
This trip offers good sheltered paddling for beginners and improvers. You can practise your new paddle skills, while being coached on the move. We get on the river on the outskirts of Exeter and paddle to Haven Bank Quay in central Exeter. Here you can stop for lunch at one of the quayside eateries, or enjoy a picnic, followed by a visit to the famous AS Water Sports kayak shop. After lunch we paddle around the Exeter basin, taking in the surroundings of this old cathedral city before slowly returning along a section of the canal or river, depending on the group's experience.
Transport is arranged to and from our base in Budleigh or your holiday accommodation.
Tour Three – Wimbleball Lake, Exmoor
Depart - 09.30 / Return 15 00
Level - Beginners, improvers or above
Price - £40.00
A great day out for everyone - kayaking and exploring Exmoor National Park. The lake itself has first class facilities both on and off the water. The land surrounding the lake offers miles of footpaths including a nine mile Round-Lake walk while other land-based activities include climbing, high ropes, archery and cycling. There is a café for light lunches, snacks and drinks or you can enjoy a break for a picnic as we paddle around the lake. This is a great location for coaching and practising your paddling skills, with majestic Exmoor as the backdrop. There is also the option to stop for a traditional cream tea on the way back to our base.
Tour Four – Dittisham and the River Dart, south Devon
Depart - 09.30 / Return 17.30
Level – Intermediate
Price - £45.00
Dittisham is one of the most attractive villages that you'll come across in South Devon. This unspoilt and exceptionally pretty riverside settlement on the River Dart is an ideal spot for a truly relaxing break and also a fantastic day-trip location for paddling. This tour is based around both exploration and relaxation, enjoying the natural beauty the area while exploring the small coves and bays along the way, where we will also stop off for a picnic lunch before slowly returning to our starting point and a well-earned drink in Dittisham's famous pub, with its scenic views.
Tour Five – Looe, Rivers and Sea Paddle
Depart - 09.00 / Return 18.00
Level – Intermediate
Price - £55
Looe is a great flexible location and is a popular choice. It is situated on both sides of the River Looe and joined together by a bridge across the river (in medieval times East Looe and West Looe were separate towns). East Looe includes the harbour and the main shopping centre. It is worth visiting the harbour quayside to watch the fishing boats coming in to unload their catch - the arrival of the small fishing fleet is a busy and colourful scene and locally caught fish can be found on the menus of many local restaurants.
Option One is to paddle and explore the East and West Looe Rivers, enjoying their stunning natural beauty as they wind two miles inland. On our return we will paddle around the harbour, taking in the pretty quayside and fishing boats as we pass through. Weather and tide permitting we will also paddle out to Looe Island.
Option Two is a paddle to Polperro and back. Polperro was one of the major smuggling bases on the beautiful Cornish coast and in an area which is great for rock hopping, exploring its coves and having fun on its beaches. After our paddle we can explore the small streets of this fishing village and enjoy a great fish and chip supper.
Tour Six – Kayaking in Corfu
Level – Beginners and upwards
In the summer months we offer kayaking trips around the stunningly beautiful north-west coast of Corfu. Click here for more information.
